Rencontres - BLED 2021
53rd International Writers' Meeting at Bled
21st - 24th of April, 2021
Dear colleagues, dear members of PEN Centres around the world,
Please receive our up-to date invitation for the 53rd International Writers' Meeting at Bled. In coordination with the PEN International we are planning to held the meeting between the 21st and 24th of April, of course with the situation regarding the pandemics in our mind. We shall try and make it happen in earnest, but in case of any additional lock down we have reserved rooms and conference halls at the Park Hotel for a later date, preliminarily for the middle of June. We shall certainly prepare the possibilities for parallel ZOOM contacts with PEN members who will not be able to attend in person. You will be informed in due course.
We plan traditional meetings of the International Writers for Peace Committee and of the International Women's Committee. As usual we shall have two round tables.
The Slovene PEN will initiate a discussion around the theme titled The future of freedom? /La future de la liberté? In accordance with PEN International this urgent question will be looked at in the context of the hundred's anniversary of PEN and PEN's contribution towards freedom of once colonised or subordinate nations regarding their languages, literature, the spirit of their culture - all of which hardly any less problematic in the present time. In the meantime we would like to reflect over the future of freedom at more than one level, considering first of all fundamental conditions for freedom: equity and fraternity. What is the role of PEN evolving this train of thought and action?
The International Writers for Peace committee will held a debate on the position and the choice any writer has and has to take regarding a division between the protest and the dialogue. The title for the WfPC round table is Writer in action: protest or dialogue /L’Écrivain engagé entre protestation et dialogue. Many Western societies are deeply divided and the danger of tumult and civil war is permanently present. The only way out is a culture of dialogue. Writers are traditionally sensitive and responsive to distress of individual and of society as a whole. Is the culture of a dialog a way forward? The theme corresponds with thin division between hate speech and freedom of speech, between war and democratically stated opposition.
We shall publish a collection of your contribution for the Round tables. The latest date for submission (not longer than 4000 letters including spaces) is 15th of March 2021. We also hope to be able to continue with our literary readings and the school program. You are welcome to send as a short prose or poetry peace to be translated into Slovene language for the readings.
The cost of the Meeting will be the same as it was in the last few years: 450,00 EUR - 3 nights all inclusive. Extra nights will be charged separately - as seen on the application form. If any of you intend to come for less then 3 nights, the contribution to the costs of the meeting (food, translations, publications, transfers, staff) will still have to be charged: 50,00 per day.
Best wishes, sincerely yours President of SC PEN Tone Peršak
